“Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
Have you ever thought about how differently you would live your life if you knew you only had ten days…one month…or six months to live? Would you moan as you head into work? Would you complain about having to walk somewhere? Or would you stop and smell the flowers… Would you be grateful to be able to walk, to feel the sun on your face… Would you savor every moment?
What if you knew someone else important in your life had only a limited time left with you? Would you speak to your brother that way? Would you disrespect your parents? Would you be too busy to visit with your family? Or would you make more trips to see them? Take an interest in their hobbies. Help carry out their bucket list…
Take your wife dancing… buy her that dress… bring her those flowers she loves. Plan that dream vacation for your husband… make his favorite dinner… bake his favorite cookies. Hang onto every word. Inhale the sound of their laughter. Make precious memories.
Well, my friend, guess what? This may come as a rude awakening to you… but our days are numbered.
“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” – James 4:14 NIV
Tomorrow is not guaranteed. Maybe you’ve never lost a loved one by sudden shock, tragic accident, or unexpected illness. For that we are grateful. But unfortunately we have felt this very real pain. My Father passed very suddenly a few months ago- out of the blue. No warning signs. No indications. There one day and gone the next. I can tell you first-hand, that this makes you look at life through a whole new lens. There’s no time for little squabbles. Forgiveness must come quickly. There’s not time to waste on the wrong path, with the wrong people, or pursuing a calling not appointed by God…
So now is the time to dance that dance. To stop and smell the roses. To take pictures of all things beautiful. To worship the Lord with all of our might. To interpret our dreams. To drop all excuses and have that uncomfortable conversation. To set our conveniences aside for others. To visit our family. To forgive and make amends. To speak to each other with dignity, honor, and respect. To see each other through God’s eyes. To open our hearts. To make that special recipe. To make “date night” a priority. To make it to your child’s band concert/soccer practice/dance recital. To tell the boss you have to leave early tonight because your family is a higher priority. To make it to church on Sunday and thank Him for giving you life. To thank Him that your family is still around. To have dinner together. To call that friend. To start caring for your body. To eat healthy. To enjoy the little things, like the feeling of the sun on your face, or the soft breeze whispering by…
This is our prayer for you. That you could start living your life in the reality that your days are numbered. That you could celebrate life. Have no regrets. Make the most of each moment, each person, and each memory.
