One Nation. Under God. Indivisible.

“For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility…”

Ephesians 2:14 NIV

Love. Unity. Peace. Faith. Working together. Shared mission. Big picture. Life in light of eternity. These are the words that come to mind as this great nation heads into a new chapter, with a new leader. Why then, are so many people- Christians included- spewing hatred, hostility, violence, and destruction?

There is great power within our words. Let’s speak LIFE, not death over our country and our leaders. As Pastor Corey Naquin of Metro Church said in his 11/06/16 sermon titled, ‘Our Words Have Power,’ “Your tongue sets the course of your life. [Your words] are bringing forth a harvest… The words produce fruit, and we will have to eat it… What you speak life into lives; what you speak against…dies…. The fastest way to strengthen something is to speak life into it…” That makes it pretty clear, doesn’t it? We want the United States of America to live! Speak Life! Speak faith of what will come to pass!

Christians prayed that God would appoint who He knew was best- for His will and His plan. According to Romans 13:1, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.So when we speak against who God chose, what kind of witness are we being? Does that confirm our faith and trust in God? Are our words unifying? Will they lead others to want to know Christ by our actions, or do we look just like the rest of the world?

No matter what side of the political spectrum you’re on, you may have anxieties. Cast those cares on God and surrender your concerns to Him in prayer. Seek Him. Ask Him to give you the fruit of the Spirit:  “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:23 NIV) This fruit will cleanse your heart, which is where life-giving, faith filled, loving words will pour out of.

So before you speak in front of your children, co-workers, friends, or family- pause for a moment. Ask the Holy Spirit to go before you. Think: What would Jesus think if He were sitting beside you, or reading your social media posts? Would He be proud? Make our Father in Heaven proud- listen to the Holy Spirit within you. Be His peacemaker.

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”

Psalm 133:1 NIV
